At NADA Miami 2023, Andrew Rafacz Gallery presents a selection of gallery artists including Judy Dolnick, Robert Burnier, Josh Dihle, Jessie Edelman, Melissa Leandro, and Ish Lipman.

A feature of this presentation is an early tondo by Judy Dolnick. In this work, Dolnick taps the deep history of the circular composition dating back to Ancient Greece when vases and broad drinking cups were decorated with round images. The round format later to be adapted by Renaissance Italy in paintings and wall reliefs, most famously by Michelango and Raphael.

For Dolnick, the tondo shape offers a contemporary space for this ancient form. Consistent through her work, but glorified here as a tondo, the shape brings an increased flexibility and freeform to her whimsical painted marks. Here petal-like pools of color drift dreamlike and unweighted while spindle-like pastel colored rods structure an otherwise turbulent and turvy painted space.
